Background of the Study:
Local midwives in Nsukka Local Government, Enugu State, serve as vital agents in providing maternal care in communities where access to formal health facilities may be limited. Their extensive experience, grounded in indigenous knowledge and community trust, positions them as crucial figures in childbirth and postpartum care (Nwachukwu, 2023). These midwives often provide personalized care that respects cultural practices while addressing common complications associated with childbirth. Despite their significance, challenges such as limited resources, lack of formal training, and inadequate integration with modern healthcare systems may compromise the quality of care provided (Anya, 2024). Recent research indicates that enhancing the capacity and skills of local midwives could lead to a reduction in maternal mortality and improved health outcomes (Eze, 2025). This study examines the role and impact of local midwives in reducing maternal mortality in Nsukka, with the aim of identifying strategies for better integration with formal health services.

Statement of the Problem:
Maternal mortality remains a pressing issue in Nsukka despite the efforts of local midwives. Challenges including insufficient training, resource constraints, and limited collaboration with formal healthcare services compromise the effectiveness of midwife-led interventions. These challenges necessitate a critical assessment of the role of local midwives and the identification of ways to enhance their contribution to reducing maternal mortality (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of local midwives in maternal healthcare.
  2. To evaluate the impact of midwife-led interventions on maternal mortality.
  3. To propose strategies for improving the capacity of local midwives.

Research Questions:

  1. What role do local midwives play in maternal health care?
  2. How effective are midwife-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality?
  3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of local midwives?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Local midwives significantly contribute to reducing maternal mortality.
  2. Inadequate training limits the effectiveness of midwife-led interventions.
  3. Enhanced capacity-building measures will improve maternal health outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
The study will provide critical evidence on the impact of local midwives in reducing maternal mortality and offer practical recommendations for integrating their services with formal healthcare systems in Nsukka Local Government (Nwachukwu, 2023; Anya, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Local Midwives: Community-based birth attendants with indigenous training.
  • Maternal Mortality: The death of a mother during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum.
  • Capacity Building: Enhancing the skills and resources of healthcare providers.
